about

This is a Pingdiscs release featuring Idiac and Tarsiform, raising funds for The Brain Tumour Charity (www.thebraintumourcharity.org)

Idiac says:
My best friend from school, David Smith, died from a rare type of brain tumour on 16 October 2021, aged 43. We had been partners in crime since the age of 16, going to raves and gigs together, sneaking into festivals, enjoying live comedy and just hanging out, setting the world to rights and laughing at silly things. Despite eventually living on different continents, we continued to share the stories of our lives with each other, as well as making sure to alert each other to any great music, film and comedy that we had discovered.

Tarsiform was also friends with David since we were all excitable teenagers in the 90s. The two tracks take us on a journey of sorts through David's life, and pay tribute to a great man.

Idiac's track, 'Pan Sapiens', aims to celebrate David's life in an upbeat way, looking back with fond memories of raves gone by, with a distinct sense of bittersweet euphoria. He was a great lover of music from Jamaica, and had a keen sense of humour, so an aggressive vocal sample is pitched up, creating an amusing 'ragga gremlin' sound. The track's title refers to David's online persona, meaning 'the thinking ape', for he was a man on a constant quest for knowledge - a globetrotting teacher of science, with a particularly keen interest in apes and other primates. Also, he had the stature of a mighty gorilla.

Tarsiform's track 'Fligilf' is more of a lament upon his passing, starting uncomfortably as it describes the glitches in David's health that started to occur as the years went by, and the fear of not knowing quite what was causing them. Eventually, as the seriousness of the situation dawns, the importance of family and friends comes in to sharp focus, leading to an emotional melodic climax. But just at the point when you feel the most connected with the track, it's gone.

Rest in peace my brother.
May Science have mercy on our souls ;)
